Coffee Shoppe Reads #2: If I Stay

I've been on a roll lately with my reading and recently reached my goal for books read this year (which was a very modest 20 as I more or less, completely stopped reading for way too long). So happy that I have finally gotten back into the groove of reading - it is something I sorely missed!

The book I want to talk about today is If I Stay by Gayle Forman. In all honesty, it's a book I picked up merely after seeing all the chatter about it on Instagram & Twitter. Curiousity got the best of me and I am so glad that it did because I sincerely loved this book! I have since learned that it is part of series and will definitely be picking up the second book as soon as possible!!

If I Stay is a young adult read that chronicles what happens to the main character, Mia, after her and her family get into a horrific car wreck. While Mia's parents are killed instantly, her brother Teddy and her are taken to the hospital where an army of doctors fight for them to make it. The book is from the perspective of Mia, who is aware of what is happening to her and realizes that she has been given a very important decision to make: Whether or not to stay.

While this is a book geared towards a younger audience, I think it could easily be a book that adults would enjoy all the same. I really enjoyed the characters in the book - especially Mia. I liked how the book not only shared what she was going through in the present, but also that it touched on earlier moments in her life, which further complicated the decision she had to make.

I'll be honest and say that I often get very pulled into a book when I am enjoying it and can be quite emotional. This book definitely brought on the tears!! At first I was a bit frustrated by the abrupt ending, but when I realized that there was a second book it all made sense. I cannot wait to read the next book! Additionally, this book is being made into a movie, slated to come out on August 22nd 2014. I would love to see it (though I often don't end up watching movies until they are on DVD) and am curious to find out if they do the book justice. Book to movie adaptations often leave much to be desired for me (though the movie for The Fault in Our Stars was just perfection in my opinion!!) and I hope that this one was done well!

If you've read this book, what are your thoughts? Will you be seeing the movie? Do you plan to read to second book or have you already? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!! As always, I welcome any book recommendations you make have for me as well!

Don't forget you can also see what I'm reading on Goodreads and I welcome any requests for book reviews!

  1. I totally agree with you on this book, and I think it is amazing. I have read the second one and it is just as good but I won't give anything away :) I am also planning on seeing the film especially because I am a huge fan of Chloe Moretz!
